COATS & JACKETS

Coats and jackets are listed in this order: GREATCOATS, FROCKS, SACKS, SHELLS, etc.   U.S. Listings Followed By C.S. Listings

U.S. FOOT PATTERN GREATCOAT: #BC9901. Here we have a C & D Jarnagin (this is an older C&D repro) sky blue U.S. single breasted foot pattern greatcoat that will fit a gentleman with a size 44 chest (see size note below). This greatcoat has been used but remains in overall very nice physical condition. Has a 3” horizontal machine sewn repair on the lower right side (see photos when posted) but no other physical damage. Does have some light fading from wear across the top edge of the collar and some small dirt stains here and there on the body. There are also some light stains on the sleeve linings. Other than that this coat is in nice condition. A dry cleaning, although not mandatory, would step this coat up a little.

This coat features a standing pattern collar w/ two black steel hooks & eyes, an elbow length cape, two rear adjustment belts w/ retainer loop, roll-back cuffs plus a split faced rear vent. Buttons are stamped brass U.S. general service eagles w/ five 7/8” on the body, one 7/8” on the rear adjustment belts and six smaller 5/8” on the cape. Changing out the 7/8” body buttons to 3/4” would be a good historical accuracy upgrade. Inside we have a sky blue wool waist length lining. The sky blue used for the lining is a different shade of sky blue than the coat itself. The sleeves are lined with muslin and there is a C & D Jarnagin Co. stamp on one of the linings. This coat is entirely machine sewn including button holes. Just to mention it, the owner machine hemmed the bottom edge of the coat but this stitching can be taken out or simply cuff off if desired. Finally, this coat had a pair of sergeant chevrons sewn on the lower sleeves at one time. There is a faint outline (from the thread) where they were sewn on. We’ll have a photo of this.

Here are some additional sizes. PLEASE check these against your own respective sizes to insure that this coat will fit you satisfactorily on all points. Just to mention it, the sizes below are taken directly off the coat. So naturally they‘ll be a little bigger than your general body sizes.

COLLAR:   26 1/2” (as measured on the coat)
SHOULDERS:   24” (as measured shoulder-to-shoulder across the back)
SLEEVE (arm) LENGTH:   26 1/2” (the cuffs can roll down an inch or two to “extend” the sleeve length a little)
FRONT LENGTH:  40 1/2“ (base of collar to front bottom hem)
BACK LENGTH:   47” (base of collar in the back to rear bottom hem)
ARMPIT-TO-ARMPIT:   27” (not an actual field of measurement in the tailoring world but a lot of guys ask for it)

SIZE NOTE: We believe the front body buttons were moved inwards at some point in time to reduce the size of the coat. These can be moved further out towards the front edge of the coat to take this greatcoat out to a size 46(which would be max for this coat based on all other corresponding sizes). If desired, we can do that for the buyer simply upon request and at NO additional charge.

This coat will ship via Postal Service “Retail Ground” to keep the shipping fee down.

C.S. FOOT PATTERN GREATCOAT: #SH1276. Made by C & D Jarnagin this size 42 (see size note below) gray wool C.S. single breasted foot pattern greatcoat has been used but remains in excellent physical condition. Has some light stains here and there along the very bottom edge but that’s about it. A dry cleaning, although not mandatory, would step this coat up a little. Also, this coat has been in storage a while and has a slight musty smell. A dry cleaning would help with this as well.

This coat features a “stand & fall” pattern collar w/ two black steel hooks & eyes, an elbow length cape, two rear adjustment belts w/ retainer loop, roll-back cuffs plus a split faced rear vent. Buttons are stamped brass block “I”s with five 7/8” on the body, two 7/8” on the rear adjustment belts and six smaller 5/8” on the cape. All the buttons have a slight patina to them but are in great physical condition (no dings, dents, etc). Inside we have a gray wool flannel waist length body ining with the sleeves lined in muslin. The owners name, city and state are printed (old style print) on the left sleeve lining at the shoulder. This coat is entirely machine sewn including button holes.

Here are some additional sizes. PLEASE check these against your own respective sizes (especially the SLEEVE LENGTH) to insure that this coat will fit you satisfactorily on all points.

COLLAR:   24” (as measured on the coat)
SHOULDERS:  21” (as measured shoulder-to-shoulder across the back)
SLEEVE (arm) LENGTH:   24” (the cuffs can roll down an inch or two to “adjust” the length a little)
FRONT LENGTH:  40 1/2“ (base of collar to front bottom hem)
BACK LENGTH:   46” (base of collar in the back to rear bottom hem)
ARMPIT-TO-ARMPIT:  26” (not an actual field of measurement in the tailoring world but a lot of guys ask for it)

SIZE NOTE: Some of the front buttons appear to have been moved inward by the previous owner to tighted this coat up a little (we will show this in an upcoming photo). These buttons can be easily moved out again to bring this coat back to a regular sized 42. We can do that for the buyer simply upon request and at NO additional charge.

This coat will ship via Postal Service “Retail Ground” to keep the shipping fee down.

Inside we have the coats original light brown wool flannel lining cut to the shortened/altered length and it still retains the standard sack coat style left breast pocket. The sleeves are lined in muslin. The bottom edge of the coat has been rolled slightly and hand hemmed into place. RICHMOND DEPOT TYPE II JACKET. #LB5529. Made by Wambaugh, White & Co. and in size 48 . This jacket has been worn a few times but remains in great physical condition (no rips, tears, repairs or anything of that sort) and was recently dry cleaned. It does have some very light marks around the inside of the collar (so light though that they would not photograph well) and some heavier stains on the sleeve linings at the cuffs (the usual stuff - see photos).

The fabric used to make this jacket is a County Cloth light tan satinette. The jacket has nine 3/4” stamped brass U.S. general service eagle buttons on the front and one of the same on each shoulder epaulette. I do not believe these are the original buttons the coat came with but can easily be replaced (by the buyer) with a button of their choice. This jacket is entirely hand top stitched and is lined in osnaburg in both body and sleeves. There is a horizontal cut internal left breast pocket w/ hand top stitching present and hand stitching around the sleeve linings at the arm holes. Rounding out this jacket are two side belt loops.

Here are some additional measurements. PLEASE check these against your own respective sizes to insure this jacket will fit you satisfactorily on ALL points.

This ENTIRELY HAND TOP STITCHED size 48 “Campaigner Grade” light tan jean wool jacket has been to the field and seen service. However, it does remains in very good physical condition. The jean wool body itself is in great shape with NO rips, tears, repairs, etc. The muslin lining has a small hand sewn repaired hole on the left breast near the arm (see the last photo in the second photo set). This coat has been FRESHLY DRY CLEANED but there are stains remaining. The coat body is quite clean but these stains are on the body lining and sleeve linings - especially down by the cuffs (see photos).

This jacket features a standing square cut collar made from French blue wool, rounded cut cuffs (no point) likewise made in French blue wool plus six 3/4" U.S. stamped brass general service eagle buttons down the front. UPDATED  C.S. TAN JEAN WOOL JACKET. #BC8711. Here’s an untrimmed size 40 C.S. natural tan colored jean wool jacket which is the seller indicates is a Ben Tart item. Nice sewing work all round. Principally machine sewn but is entirely hand top stitched plus has hand sewn button holes. This jacket has been worn a couple times but has been freshly dry cleaned. However, a number of small light color (grayish) marks are scattered on the outside of the coat - a number on the front but the majority are on the back. Not sure what these are from. Please take a close look at the photos for all this. There are also a couple light marks on the coats lining and we believe these were from the leather suspender ends.

On the front are six 7/8" stamped brass NORTH CAROLINA state seal buttons which can easily be changed out by the buyer. They can also be moved a little closer to the front edge to give this jacket a little more chest and waist room. There are no shoulder epaulettes or side belt loops and the cuffs are plain. Lined in natural colored cotton drill in both the body and sleeves. There are two horizontal cut pockets in the lining - one on the left and one on the right. There is also a jean wool wear strip along the bottom of the lining.

Here are some additional measurements. PLEASE check these against your own respective sizes to insure this jacket will fit you satisfactorily on ALL points.

C.S.GRAY WOOL JACKET. #BC3536. Made by Calico Corner this light gray wool roundabout measures in at a size 38. There is a penned “46” on the lining by the collar but this is NOT the size of this coat. We measured it and it is definitely a 38. So we're not sure what the "46" is about. May have been a customer order number (??) but it certainly is not a sizing.

So what we have here is a size 38 medium weight light gray wool roundabout that has been to the field but was dry cleaned before being sent in to us. There are some very light stains on the muslin lining and one darker one on the lining back. Other than that this coat is in very nice condition (no rips, tears, repairs, etc.). The coat is principally machine sewn (including button holes) but does have some hand felling around a muslin facing on the inner collar plus around the arm holes. There is a wool wear strip along the bottom of the coat on the inside. Rounding out this coat is a short standing collar, a right side breast pocket in the lining, pointed functioning cuffs (same color as the coat) plus eight 3/4” “CSA” buttons on the front and two of the same on one cuff and one "CSA" and a replacement U.S. eagle on the other cuff. Just to note, if you wish to have the cuffs function (button and unbutton) more easily we would recommend changing the current 3/4” buttons used in the cuffs to smaller 1/2” or 5/8”. The current 3/4” buttons are a little too large to work easily through the holes.

Here are some additional sizes. PLEASE check these against your own measurements to insure this coat will fit you satisfactorily. Please take particular notice of the short sleeve (arm) length.

COLLAR:  18” (not counting the 4” gap between collar ends)

C.S. REDDISH-BROWN WOOL ROUNDABOUT: #SH9227 Made from a lightweight rusty brown wool flannel this size 38 Short (classified as a “short” due to the sleeve length) untrimmed C.S. jacket was worn a few times but remains in great physical condition. Has a tiny bit of “fuzzing up” along the top edge of the collar but not a big thing by any means. TROUSERS

PLEASE NOTE: The waist measurements on ANY trousers listed on this page are "WAIST AT NAVEL LEVEL" (that high up). This is not necessarily the same waist size found on your blue jean size tags. ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK YOUR WAIST SIZE AT NAVEL LEVEL to insure the trousers you order fit satisfactorily. Three minutes taken to check this measurement may save you all the hassle of reboxing the trousers, the hike to the post office or UPS to ship them back, paying shipping and insurance charges, etc. as well as time lost if you needed the trousers in a hurry.

Now if this measurement stuff gets confusing, no sweat e-mail me and we can sort it all out in short order. :-)

All WAIST measurements on the trousers listed below (or found elsewhere on this site) are all with the rear waistband split TIED CLOSED. :-)

is an in-house Stony Brook Company term for our top-of-the-line trousers in terms of historical accuracy (patterning, assembly, hand sewn details, etc).

SCARLET RED CHASSEUR PATTERN TROUSERS. On Temporary Hold #AMS7756.. Brand new never worn scarlet red chasseur trousers made from pre-washed medium weight wool (a blend of 80% wool - 20% synthetic ). The pattern for these trousers was copied from an original pair by the SBC staff a number of years ago. 44" waist x unfinished length. We can easily alter the waist and set the length for the buyer at no extra charge (just give us some time to get the work done as we’re mega-busy in the shop right now).

These trousers are made to “Standard Grade” specifications (principally machine-sewn but with hand sewn button holes and some assorted hand tacking) and feature a pleated waist, black stipple tin buttons (five 3/4” on the waistband and five smaller 1/2” in the fly), two rear adjustment belts w/ a brass two-tine buckle plus side seam pockets. All interior cottons are white cotton drill except for the left side fly facings which are black polished cotton. Cuffs will be rolled and hand hemmed if the buyer wishes us to set the length. Originally made by SBC.

Oh yes, concerning the suspender button count – these currently have four (4) suspender buttons (two front and two back … for the “poor boy” type suspenders). If you’d prefer, we can add two more buttons to the front giving you four in the front and two on the back. No charge, just let us know.

PHOTO NOTE: Please disregard the suspenders on these trousers. We had an identical pair of trousers on consignment recently and that pair had suspenders attached. These photos show that first pair. Our digital camera is in the shop for repairs which is why we could not shoot photos of the pair listed here (#AMS7756). The reason we used photos of that first pair in this listing is to show the pattern and details used in the pair listed (given that they’re identical to that previous pair). Of course any questions about that please E-MAIL ME.

DARK BLUE U.S. STAFF OFFICER TROUSERS.   #BD5532. Before we begin we wish to mention that on this particular pair of trousers we can change the staff gold side seam trim to sky blue, red or yellow if the buyer wishes). With that said, here's what we have ...

Brand new never worn and made from 100% wool. Currently measures in at 48” waist x 32" length. The upper portion of these trousers have been disassembled as the owner requested some alterations. However, shortly after we received (and began work on) these trousers he decided to sell them. So given that the upper portion of these trousers have been disassembled we can alter them (no charge) to any smaller (48" waist or less) size requirements. We can also adjust the length (longer by 1” -or- to any shorter length).

These trousers have been made to "Standard Grade" specifications (principally machine sewn but w/ hand sewn button holes and some assorted hand tacking). The gold side seam piping is actual METALLIC wire, not Mylar or plastic. The flexible metallic tape has been sewn on to a yellow cotton twill tape backing to create this composite metallic piping. There are seven 3/4” black stipple tin buttons on the waistband, five smaller 1/2” in the fly, two rear adjustment belts w/ a two-tine brass buckle, side seam pattern main pockets, a right side watch pocket plus rolled hand hemmed cuffs. Inside we have white cotton drill pockets, waistband facings and right side fly facing with black polished cotton left side fly facings. These trousers are cut with a high waist and a tapered waistband. These are correctly cut officer pattern trousers; not enlisted men’s trousers with a 1/8” cord sewn down the side and sold as “officers pattern” trousers (something you see on sutler’s row on occasion). Originally made by SBC.

PLEASE NOTE: We are MEGA busy in the shop so please allow us about five (5) weeks to be able to get to and then complete any work on these trousers.

PHOTO NOTES:   The trousers in the photos are coming out a LOT lighter gray than they actually are. This is due to the bright lights and the camera flash as these trousers are in fact a DARK charcoal gray (free samples available if you'd like to see the fabric in hand). Also, the trousers in the photos shows bone buttons. These were added by special request of the customer as these trousers usually come with black stipple faced tin buttons.

DARK BLUE WOOL TROUSERS. #LB1991. Privately made and measures in at 40"/42" Waist x 33" Unfinished Length. These trousers have been worn but remain in excellent physical condition (no rips, tears, repairs, etc). They do have some tiny light stains on the inside muslin pieces (facings and pockets) but absolutely minor. Entirely machine sewn except for hand sewn button holes and some assorted hand tacking. Side seam pattern pockets. No watch pocket and no adjustment in the back (no belts or tie-cord). Paperback tin buttons on the waistband and in the fly. The seller indicates the general pattern of these trousers are based on a pair of C.S. Sanitation Commission trousers in the Museum Of The Confederacy.

The buttoning fly is a little unique as the panel where the button holes only has button holes on the facing (back) side. Thus when the fly is buttoned, the buttons themselves are actually inside the fly panel in-between the rear facing and the wool front piece. Hence you do not see the fly buttons when the fly is buttoned closed.

OFFICER'S TROUSERS

C.S. SURGEON’S DARK BLUE WOOL TROUSERS. #DS6244. Made By Quartermaster Shop and measures in at 40" x 31". Will go 42" w/ the rear tie let out. Also has 2" of fabric rolled up in the cuff which can be used to lengthen the trousers a little. These trousers have the C.S. regulation pattern side seam striping (black w/ gold trimmed edges). The gold is actually Mylar (a synthetic) and not a genuine metallic trim. These trousers have seen a LOT of wear but are still solid and serviceable. They do have some wear in the crotch and at the base of fly but no holes. The gold edging on the striping has experienced a lot of wear and numerous subsequent repairs. However, the striping can be removed (it’s sewn on by machine so it will tape a little patience) to make these a plain non-descript pair of dark blue trousers. Pewter buttons used throughout on both the waistband and in the fly. The owner added two hand sewn grommet holes in the back of the waistband to accommodate a tie-back cord. Rounding out these trousers are side seam main pockets and white interior cottons (facings, pockets, etc). There is no watch pocket in these trousers.

C.S. DARK BLUE STAFF OFFICER TROUSERS. Sale Pending  #DS4230. Made by Quartermaster Shop and are entirely machine sewn including button holes. They have been worn but remain in excellent physical condition. They have been freshly dry cleaned and look great! These trousers measure in as a size 42" x 30". The size tag says “38” but they’re actually a 40” … and given the split in the rear waistband, it automatically opens 2” when you put these on ( these trousers do not have rear adjustment belts or a tie-back cord). So with that we classify these trousers as fitting a 42” waist line and will stand behind that sizing call. The length is 30” as hemmed but there is enough extra fabric in the cuff to let down another 2” plus have a little bit for a small hem. There is a 1 1/4” wide metallic gold stripe running down the outer seam on each side. The striping is machine sewn and runs behind the side seam pocket openings. Additional features are a large right side watch pocket, seven 3/4” pewter buttons on the waistband, four of the same in the fly plus all inside cottons are heavy unbleached muslin.
