COATS & JACKETS

Coats and jackets are listed in this order: GREATCOATS, FROCKS, SACKS, SHELLS, etc. U.S. Listings Followed By C.S. Listings

C.S. FOOT PATTERN GREATCOAT: #SH1276. Made by C & D Jarnagin this size 42 (see size note below) gray wool C.S. single breasted foot pattern greatcoat has been used but remains in excellent physical condition. Has some light stains here and there along the very bottom edge but that’s about it. A dry cleaning, although not mandatory, would step this coat up a little. Also, this coat has been in storage a while and has a slight musty smell. A dry cleaning would help with this as well.

This coat features a “stand & fall” pattern collar w/ two black steel hooks & eyes, an elbow length cape, two rear adjustment belts w/ retainer loop, roll-back cuffs plus a split faced rear vent. Buttons are stamped brass block “I”s with five 7/8” on the body, two 7/8” on the rear adjustment belts and six smaller 5/8” on the cape. All the buttons have a slight patina to them but are in great physical condition (no dings, dents, etc). Inside we have a gray wool flannel waist length body ining with the sleeves lined in muslin. The owners name, city and state are printed (old style print) on the left sleeve lining at the shoulder. This coat is entirely machine sewn including button holes.

Here are some additional sizes. PLEASE check these against your own respective sizes (especially the SLEEVE LENGTH) to insure that this coat will fit you satisfactorily on all points.

COLLAR: 24” (as measured on the coat)
SHOULDERS: 21” (as measured shoulder-to-shoulder across the back)
SLEEVE (arm) LENGTH: 24” (the cuffs can roll down an inch or two to “adjust” the length a little)
FRONT LENGTH: 40 1/2“ (base of collar to front bottom hem)
BACK LENGTH: 46” (base of collar in the back to rear bottom hem)
ARMPIT-TO-ARMPIT: 26” (not an actual field of measurement in the tailoring world but a lot of guys ask for it)

SIZE NOTE: Some of the front buttons appear to have been moved inward by the previous owner to tighted this coat up a little (we will show this in an upcoming photo). These buttons can be easily moved out again to bring this coat back to a regular sized 42. We can do that for the buyer simply upon request and at NO additional charge.

This coat will ship via Postal Service “Retail Ground” to keep the shipping fee down.

U.S. INFANTRY FROCK COAT. Sale Pending  #MC3800. Made by Ray Hock this high end size 38 "museum grade" frock coat has been worn a couple times but remains in excellent condition. Freshly dry cleaned but some light sweat stains do remain on the sleeve linings. Made from a dark blue lightweight wool. Comes with the mounting hardware for shoulder scales already sewn on (scales not included) and has two service stripes per sleeve. There is just a very slight amount of fading on one of the upper corners of the sky blue collar trim. Certainly not bad at all though and it’s a tiny amount at that. There is also some very light stitch marks on the sleeves where chevrons were once sewn on. These are just light stitch marks and NOT fade. They will probably disappear after the coat has been worn a little while. On one of the sleeve linings is the maker's stamp ("R & W") which historically would have been Rockhill & Wilson in Philadelphia and a size "1" stamp (a size 1 coat fitting a 36" chest). Now this frock is a little bigger than a 36" and will actually fit a size 38" chest. One of the crew here at the shop wears a size 38 coat and this frock fits him very well. So we're classifying this frock as a size 38.

The infantry cording on this coat is a rich darker shade of sky blue and very well executed around the standing collar and on the pointed cuffs; up the cuff splits as well. There is a tiny but of fraying on the color cording on one of the cuffs ( see photos). This can be trimmed off with a little careful scissor work. Down the front are nine 1/2” stamped brass U.S. general service eagle buttons w/ two of the same on the back. Two small 1/2” U.S. eagles are on the functioning cuffs. The bottom edge of the skirt is raw. Inside we have lightly padded/machine quilted black Silesia breast panels, muslin sleeve linings, the proper wool facing (lining) across the center back at the waistline, plus two black cotton internal entry tail pockets. Lot of hand sewing is evident in this frock including hand sewn button holes of course. Finally, the hook & eye in the collar has a little surface rust on it (which is visible in the third set of photos). This can be carefully steel wooled off or you can replace the hook & eye all together.

Here are some additional measurements. PLEASE check these against your own respective sizes to insure this coat will fit you satisfactorily on all points.

COLLAR: 19” (fits up to a 19” neck comfortably)
SHOULDERS: 18” (as measured shoulder-to-shoulder across the back)
SLEEVE (arm) LENGTH: 25” (edge of shoulder to the bottom of the cuff)
FRONT LENGTH TO WAIST: 17“ (base of collar to front waistline)
FRONT LENGTH: TOTAL: 36“ (base of collar to front bottom hem)
BACK LENGTH TO WAIST: 18” (base of collar in the back to rear waistline)
WAIST: will fit up to a 34” waistline comfortably
ARMPIT-TO-ARMPIT: 22” (not an actual point of measurement in the tailoring world but a lot of guys ask for it)

PHOTO NOTE: This coat is coming out looking purple-ish in some of the following photos. This is just the effects of the bright lights and camera flash.

U.S. MOUNTED SERVICES JACKET; CAVALRY: On Temporary Hold #SH8365 This Quartermaster Shop made U.S. cavalry “shell” jacket was originally manufactured as a size 42. However, measurement-wise it seemed to fall in between a 40 and a 42. As a result we have classified this coat as a size 40 so it would be a comfortable fit (40) rather than something very close-fitting (42). We refer you to the measurements given below to get an all round picture of the size of this coat. Particular attention should be given to the sleeve length - 23 1/2” which is short.

This mounted services jacket has seen service but remains in excellent physical condition (NO rips, tears repairs, etc). This jacket was just dry cleaned but some light stains remain on the body lining - some of them from the suspenders leather pieces. The jacket is trimmed in a lemon yellow 3/8” cotton twill tape according to regulations and features a 12 button front, 2 buttons per collar side plus 2 button functioning cuffs. All buttons are stamped brass 5/8” U.S. general service eagles. Two rear belt bolsters (“pillows”) are present on the back. Body and sleeves are lined in muslin and there is an internal left breast pocket present. The owners name is written in magic marker just above the pocket. It's legible in the coat but we blocked it out in the photo showing the pocket. Tall standing collar w/ a hook & eye. This coat is entirely machine sewn including button holes

Here are some additional sizes. PLEASE check these against your own respective sizes (especially the SLEEVE LENGTH) to insure that this coat will fit you satisfactorily on all points.

UPDATED!  C.S. GRAY JEAN WOOL JACKET. #LB6413. Made by Bob Neikirk from a County Cloth gray jean wool this untrimmed size 40 jean wool jacket has been worn but was freshly dry cleaned. However, some stains do remain on coat as well as on the cotton body lining. There are some areas of very light fading here and there on the jacket but certainly nothing drastic or that stands out. There is also the faint outline of some corporal chevrons on the sleeves. Overall though, this jacket remains in excellent physical condition (no rips, tears, repairs, etc). There are six “coin style” stamped brass “sunburst” North Carolina buttons on the front. These can very easily be changed out by the buyer to any state seal or branch of service button. Inside we have a cotton drill body lining with two horizontal cut pockets - one on the left and one on the right. The sleeves are also lined in cotton drill. This jacket is entirely machine sewn except for hand sewn button holes, hand stitching around the sleeve linings at the arm holes plus hand stitching on the body lining along the base of the collar.

C.S. COMMUTATION JACKET. #AM5034. Made by Cody Mobley this C.S. size 50 (but with a slim waist) untrimmed commutation jacket was made by Cody Mobley (The Company Tailor). High end work all round with lots of hand stitching! Brand new never worn (except to try on). Lived in the closet for a long time and the seller decided it’s time to move it along. Made from a khaki color jean wool w/ the sleeves and the two back panels made from a slightly lighter shade of the same fabric (piece dyed). This was done on purpose by the maker. The dye is a little uneven in spots so it’s definitely not commercially dyed jean. This jacket features seven 3/4" stamped brass "D" (dragoon) buttons on the front, stout osnaburg used to line the body and sleeves plus an inside left breast "patch" style pocket is present.

SIZE NOTE: As mentioned above this jacket has a slim waist size (fits up to a 38” waistline) since the owners physique is that of a weightlifter (large chest / narrow waist). So if you’re interested in this jacket but your waist size is bigger than 38”, you’ll have to leave some of the lower buttons undone (just sayin’ :-).

Here are some additional measurements: PLEASE check these against your own respective sizes to insure this jacket will fit you satisfactorily on ALL points.

COLLAR: 22 1/2” (not counting the 1 3/4" gap between collar ends)
SHOULDERS: 22 1/2” (as measured shoulder-to-shoulder across the back)
SLEEVE (arm) LENGTH: 27” (top edge of the shoulder to the bottom edge of the cuff)

C.S. TAN JEAN WOOL JACKET. SIZE. #BC8711. Here’s an untrimmed size 40 C.S. natural tan colored jean wool jacket which is the seller indicates is a Ben Tart item. Nice sewing work all round. Principally machine sewn but is entirely hand top stitched plus has hand sewn button holes. This jacket has been worn a couple times but has been freshly dry cleaned. However, a number of small light color (grayish) marks are scattered on the outside of the coat - a number on the front but the majority are on the back. Not sure what these are from. Please take a close look at the photos for all this. There are also a couple light marks on the coats lining and we believe these were from the leather suspender ends.

On the front are six 7/8" stamped brass NORTH CAROLINA state seal buttons which can easily be changed out by the buyer. They can also be moved a little closer to the front edge to give this jacket a little more chest and waist room. There are no shoulder epaulettes or side belt loops and the cuffs are plain. Lined in natural colored cotton drill in both the body and sleeves. There are two horizontal cut pockets in the lining - one on the left and one on the right. There is also a jean wool wear strip along the bottom of the lining.

C.S.GRAY WOOL JACKET. #BC3536. Made by Calico Corner this light gray wool roundabout measures in at a size 38. There is a penned “46” on the lining by the collar but this is NOT the size of this coat. We measured it and it is definitely a 38. So we're not sure what the "46" is about. May have been a customer order number (??) but it certainly is not a sizing.

So what we have here is a size 38 medium weight light gray wool roundabout that has been to the field but was dry cleaned before being sent in to us. There are some very light stains on the muslin lining and one darker one on the lining back. Other than that this coat is in very nice condition (no rips, tears, repairs, etc.). The coat is principally machine sewn (including button holes) but does have some hand felling around a muslin facing on the inner collar plus around the arm holes. There is a wool wear strip along the bottom of the coat on the inside. Rounding out this coat is a short standing collar, a right side breast pocket in the lining, pointed functioning cuffs (same color as the coat) plus eight 3/4” “CSA” buttons on the front and two of the same on one cuff and one "CSA" and a replacement U.S. eagle on the other cuff. Just to note, if you wish to have the cuffs function (button and unbutton) more easily we would recommend changing the current 3/4” buttons used in the cuffs to smaller 1/2” or 5/8”. The current 3/4” buttons are a little too large to work easily through the holes.

Here are some additional sizes. PLEASE check these against your own measurements to insure this coat will fit you satisfactorily. Please take particular notice of the short sleeve (arm) length.

COLLAR: 18” (not counting the 4” gap between collar ends)
SHOULDERS: 19” (as measured shoulder-to-shoulder across the back)
SLEEVE (arm) LENGTH: 22” (edge of shoulder to the bottom of the cuff)

TROUSERS

PLEASE NOTE: The waist measurements on ANY trousers listed on this page are "WAIST AT NAVEL LEVEL" (that high up). This is not necessarily the same waist size found on your blue jean size tags. ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK YOUR WAIST SIZE AT NAVEL LEVEL to insure the trousers you order fit satisfactorily. Three minutes taken to check this measurement may save you all the hassle of reboxing the trousers, the hike to the post office or UPS to ship them back, paying shipping and insurance charges, etc. as well as time lost if you needed the trousers in a hurry.

Now if this measurement stuff gets confusing, no sweat e-mail me and we can sort it all out in short order. :-)

All WAIST measurements on the trousers listed below (or found elsewhere on this site) are all with the rear waistband split TIED CLOSED. :-)

is an in-house Stony Brook Company term for our top-of-the-line trousers in terms of historical accuracy (patterning, assembly, hand sewn details, etc).

C.S. DARK GRAY WOOL MOUNTED TROUSERS. Sale Pending  #MS2127. These Confederate gray wool mounted pattern trousers are partially completed at this time. The lady making them cut them out and started assembling the small pieces but ceased working on them early on. So with that they are only about 10% finished. We will of course finish them here at the shop upon sale.

These trousers currently measure in with a 48" waist. However, because they are only partially completed we can very easily alter the size to the buyers personal size specifications - and without any additional charge. The wool is a medium weight dark (charcoal) gray fabric and a blend of 85% wool - 15% synthetic fiber. Upon completion these trousers will feature side seam pattern main pockets, a right side watch pocket, black polished cotton left side fly facings, white cotton drill waistband & right side fly facing, two rear adjustment belts w/ a brass two-tine buckle plus black stipple tin buttons. Cuffs will be hemmed to the buyers length and faced on the inside with a separately applied hand felled wool facings.

Also included with these trousers will be several lengths or strips of wool (raw edge/unfinished) which the seller said were to be used for undersole straps. We will of course include these - and the four buttons she sent along for hooking them up (2 buttons per cuff) - inside the cuffs them when the trousers ship. This way if the buyer wishes to cut these pieces to length for undersole straps, everything is available (wool strips & buttons) for the buyer to use.

These trousers will be assembled to "Standard Grade" specifications (principally machine sewn but w/ hand sewn button holes). As per correctly made mounted pattern trousers they will feature a reversed seat/crotch seam and reversed inseams.

PLEASE NOTE: The 2019 reenactment season is upon us and we are VERY BUSY (!!) in the shop. So with that please allow us at least five to six weeks to be able to get to and assemble these trousers. Any questions on this please e-mail me BEFORE you buy.

DARK BLUE WOOL TROUSERS. #LB1991. Privately made and measures in at 40"/42" Waist x 33" Unfinished Length. These trousers have been worn but remain in excellent physical condition (no rips, tears, repairs, etc). They do have some tiny light stains on the inside muslin pieces (facings and pockets) but absolutely minor. Entirely machine sewn except for hand sewn button holes and some assorted hand tacking. Side seam pattern pockets. No watch pocket and no adjustment in the back (no belts or tie-cord). Paperback tin buttons on the waistband and in the fly. The seller indicates the general pattern of these trousers are based on a pair of C.S. Sanitation Commission trousers in the Museum Of The Confederacy.

The buttoning fly is a little unique as the panel where the button holes are only has button holes on the facing side. Thus when the fly is buttoned, the buttons themselves are actually inside the fly panel between the rear facing and the wool front. Hence you do not see the fly buttons when the fly is buttoned closed.

OFFICER'S TROUSERS

CADET GRAY PETER TAIT TROUSERS. #AMS3636. These based on Lt. Michael Glennan's (36th N.C. State Troops) cadet gray Peter Tait imported trousers. Made in cadet gray 100% wool. These trousers currently measure in with a 48” waist but can be altered to buyers specific sizes (at no additional charge). They are about 75% completed and need final finishing work (stitching down all the facings, making the waistband button hole, attaching the buttons & rear adjustment belts, finishing the upper back panel lining plus lining & hemming the cuffs). Once finished these trousers will feature ( beyond what has been mentioned above) black horn buttons, top entry ("mule ear") main pockets, an upper waistband set / scalloped (crescent) cut watch pocket, plus all pockets and facings are off-white linen … not drill, not muslin - actual linen. All these features are found on the originals referenced. Just to mention it, these trousers do not have button holes on the “mule ear” pockets. It is believed that Lt. Glennan added these himself to his original pair and that did not come that way from Tait. If you want buttonholes added to the pockets we can do that for a small fee (covers time on the job.

These trousers are under the needle to “Museum Grade” specifications (machine sewn main seams but w/ extensive hand finishing) and will be completed as such. There is NO red side seam welting as found on the originals (more info on this below). These trousers were privately started but will be finished by SBC.

With reference to being finished, we are VERY BUSY in the shop so please allow between seven to eight weeks for us to be able to get to then complete the work needed on these trousers. Please understand this BEFORE you buy.

A word about the red side seam welting and the button holes on the pockets. If you wish these features to be added to these trousers E-MAIL ME BEFORE you buy so I can get back to you with a price for that work.

UPDATE: 03/09. We have had several inquiries as to whether the owner would sell these trousers "as is". We checked with them and they indicated that these trousers are only to be sold as a completed (finished) pair.
