U.S INFANTRY FROCK COAT. SIZE 54: #KL5453. Made NJ Sekela this size 54 U.S. frock coat was worn once and remains in great physical condition. Has two very small & very light stains by the collar, some very light marks on the sleeve linings at the cuffs and a small stain on the bottom edge of the skirt in the back (see photos). These are all very minor and the frock overall is in really great condition. Just to mention it, a dry cleaning (although certainly not mandatory whatsoever) would get all these trite stains or marks out. Just sayin’ (as the saying goes :-)

Made in Sekela’s dark slate blue wool broadcloth with a full pigeon breasted cut and trimmed around the standing collar and pointed functioning cuffs in a thin sky blue piping. Hook & eye is present in the collar. Nine 3/4” stamped brass U.S. general service eagles on the front, two of the same on the back and two smaller 5/8” stamped brass U.S. eagles on each cuff (one is a replacement and has a small area of discoloration). The bottom skirt hem is raw. Inside we have black cotton padded & hand quilted breast panel linings plus muslin sleeve linings. There is also a small section of each underarm lined in black cotton as well. Two internal entry pockets in the folds of the skirt at the tails. There are also two sets of hooks & eyes in the skirt for hooking the skirt back on to the tails for ease of marching. This is an original authentic feature that you do not find in mainstream frocks. There are no stamps in this coat (maker/size/inspector).

Comes w/ a brand new set of private’s shoulder scales w/ attachment pieces ( a $50.00 value by themselves being offered with this coat for free). These scales and attachment pieces have not been attached to the frock yet and are still in their original shipping bag.

Here are some additional measurements. PLEASE check these against your own respective sizes to insure this frock coat will fit you satisfactorily on ALL points.

COLLAR: 22 1/2” (when hooked closed)
SHOULDERS: 23 1/2” (as measured shoulder-to-shoulder across the back)

U.S. INFANTRY FROCK COAT.   #MC3876. Made by Ray Hock this high end size 38 "museum grade" frock coat has been worn a couple times but remains in GREAT condition. Freshly dry cleaned but some sweat stains do remain on the sleeve linings. Made from a dark blue lightweight wool. Comes with the mounting hardware for shoulder scales already sewn on (scales not included) and has two service stripes per sleeve. There is just a very slight amount of fading on one of the upper corners of the sky blue collar trim. Certainly not bad at all though and it’s a tiny amount at that. There is also some very slight stitch marks on the sleeves where chevrons were once sewn on. These are just light stitch marks and NOT fade. They will probably disappear after the coat has been worn a little while. On one of the sleeve linings is the maker's stamp ("R & W") which historically would have been Rockhill & Wilson in Philadelphia and a size "1" stamp. A size 1 coat would be a 36" in the chest but we size this frock more as a 38". So we are listing it as a 38".

The infantry cording on this coat is a rich darker shade of sky blue and very well executed around the standing collar and on the pointed cuffs; up the cuff splits as well. Down the front are nine 1/2” stamped brass U.S. general service eagle buttons w/ two of the same on the back. Two small 1/2” U.S. eagles are on the functioning cuffs. The bottom edge of the skirt is raw. Inside we have lightly padded/machine quilted black Silesia breast panels, muslin sleeve linings, the proper wool facing (lining) across the center back at the waistline, plus two black cotton internal entry tail pockets. Lot of hand sewing is evident in this frock including hand sewn button holes of course.

COLLAR: 19” (fits up to a 19” neck comfortably)
SHOULDERS: 18” (as measured shoulder-to-shoulder across the back)
SLEEVE (arm) LENGTH: 25” (edge of shoulder to the bottom of the cuff)

U.S. FIVE BUTTON SACK COAT. #BC8938. Made from a size 46 Wambaugh, White & Co. Schuylkill Arsenal four button sack coat kit this blouse has seen very little use and remains in great condition. This coat is completely hand sewn although the sewing is not on par with some of the regular full time makers out there (please see photos). However, given that the coat is entirely hand sewn it can easily be taken apart are reassembled with finer stitching.

This coat is made from a lightweight indigo dark blue wool flannel and features a square cut falling collar, four panel body, four piece collar and two piece sleeves. Although this item started life as a Schuylkill Arsenal enlisted man’s issue sack coat, the person assembling it applied FIVE button holes on the front plus added the three cuff buttons to make it look an officers sack coat. However, one body button (the top one) is missing so there are only four 7/8” U.S. Infantry officer “I” buttons currently on the coat. There are three small 1/2” infantry officer “I” buttons sewn on each cuff. Inside we have a tan & green checkered cotton body lining plus muslin sleeve linings (w/ exposed seams). In the left sleeve are size and makers stamps (again, this started life as a Schuylkill Arsenal enlisted man’s sack coat) done in red ink. The bottom of the body lining is shorter than the coat itself, unhemmed and not attached to the bottom of the coat. The “shorter-than-the-body” detail is as per original pattering.

Below are some additional sizes. PLEASE check these against your own measurements to insure this coat will fit you satisfactorily.

SHOULDERS: 22” (as measured shoulder-to-shoulder across the back)
SLEEVE (arm) LENGTH: 25” (edge of shoulder to the bottom of the cuff)

U.S. FOUR BUTTON SACK COATS. #SST3270. On hand is a small lot of high end contract pattern U.S. four button sack coats. These sack coats are BRAND NEW NEVER USED and made from a pre-shrunk lightweight 8 oz indigo dark blue wool flannel. Please note that in some of the photos below the coats look pale dark blue and in others they look a little purple-ish. This is simply due to the bright lights and camera flash. These coats are in fact a solid rich indigo dark blue color. These coats are lined in lightweight wool flannel and have muslin sleeve linings. Some body linings are gray and some are a honey brown color. These blouses reflect a mix of machine sewing and hand finishing. Featured are correct smaller style falling collar, tapered front facings, internal left breast pocket, split scalloped cuffs plus four 3/4" stamped brass U.S. eagle buttons down the front. There are no stamps in these coats at this time. However, we will add a repro period inspector's stamp upon sale. Made by Sixth Street Tailor.

Lastly, a note concerning "pre-shrunk" as mentioned above (because we've been asked about it a lot). The woolens used in these coats have been soaked to pre-shrink the fabric prior to cutting. This means that if these blouses get damp any shrinkage will be minimal. However, if you get caught in a downpour and these coats get saturated (soaked) they will shrink further. If you take a dive into Antietam creek, the Mississippi or any body of water, these coats will likewise shrink. So if they get damp, you should have no problem. If they get saturated where you can wring them out, they will shrink considerably. THIS IS THE NATURE OF ANY WOOL FLANNEL GARMENT and applies to any makers product using wool flannel. 'Nuff said.

U.S. FOUR BUTTON SACK COAT; SALE PENDING  #AM9826. Just in is this size 42 Schuylkill Arsenal pattern sack coat was made by Bristol Hollow (Gary Keefer). Four piece collar, split scalloped cuffs, internal left breast pocket and four 3/4" stamped brass US eagle buttons on the front. Sewn in logwood thread. Also, in an effort to historically demonstrate arsenal's and contractor's hasty assembly as well as using every scrap of wool they had for production, the maker of this sack coat pieced the inside front facings on this coat with a different shade of dark blue wool (a.k.a. "piecing"). This is something you do not see on a lot of repro coats today (see photos). Finally, because of the cost of this item it will be sent fully insured.

U.S. CAVALRY MOUNTED SERVICES JACKET. #BC4644 Maker unknown on this size 46 U.S. cavalry "shell jacket" but it comes from sutler row. It has been worn but was freshly dry cleaned prior to being sent in to us. There are some light stains remaining on the sleeve linings (under the arms and at the cuffs) and some light intermittent stains here and there on the yellow trim around the collar (not all that bad). The coat itself thought is in great physical condition inside and out ( NO rips, tears, repairs, smells, dust, dirt, etc). C.S.GRAY WOOL ROUNDABOUT JACKET. Size38. #BC3536. Made by Calico Corner this light gray wool roundabout measures in at a size 38. There is a penned “46” on the lining by the collar but this is NOT the size of this coat. We measured it and it is definitely a 38. If the 46 is an indication of the original size, then while this coat may have started life as a 46 it is definitely a 38 at this point in time and this shop will stand behind that sizing.

So what we have here is a size 38 medium weight light gray wool roundabout that has been to the field but was dry cleaned before being sent in to us. There are some very light stains on the muslin lining and one darker one on the lining back. We believe this darker one is from suspenders. Other than that this coat is in very nice condition (no rips, tears, repairs, etc.). The coat is principally machine sewn (including button holes) but does have some hand felling around a muslin facing on the inner collar plus around the arm holes. There is a wool wear strip along the bottom of the coat on the inside. Rounding out this coat is a short standing collar, pointed functioning cuffs (same color as the coat) plus eight 3/4” “CSA” buttons on the front and two of the same on each cuff. Just to note, if you wish to have the cuffs function (button and unbutton) more easily we would recommend changing the current 3/4” buttons used in the cuffs to smaller 1/2” or 5/8”. The current 3/4” buttons are a little too large to work easily through the holes.

Here are some additional sizes. PLEASE check these against your own measurements to insure this coat will fit you satisfactorily. Please take particular notice of the short sleeve (arm) length.

COLLAR: 18” (not counting the 4” gap between collar ends)

These do appear to be coffee stains and a dry cleaner should be able to get them out. Other than that though the coat is in great condition. Made from a light brown-on-tan FHW jean wool with machine sewn main seams but is entirely hand top stitched in a dark brown thread. There is hand felling along the inside base of the rounded cut standing collar as well as on the sleeve linings at the arm holes and in the cuffs. The body is lined in oatmeal colored osnaburg as are the French cut (wide elbow) sleeves. There are no pockets in the lining or on the body. Two non-buttoning shoulder straps are present along with two narrow non-buttoning side belts loops (one per side). There are six flat 1” pewter “I” buttons down the front and one each of the same on each shoulder strap.

C.S. RICHMOND DEPOT JACKET w/ FRENCH BLUE COLLAR AND CUFFS. #BC8726.This ENTIRELY HAND TOP STITCHED size 48 “Campaigner Grade” light tan jean wool jacket has been to the field and seen service. However, it does remains in very good physical condition. The body itself is in great shape with NO rips, tears, repairs, smalls, etc. The muslin lining is in overall very good condition but has a small hole on the left breast near the arm. This hole can be repaired either by some hand darning or covered with a small patch (field repairs). This coat has been FRESHLY DRY CLEANED but there are stains remaining. These can be found on the body lining and in the sleeves - especially down by the cuffs (see photos).

As for jacket features we have a standing square cut collar made from French blue wool, rounded cut cuffs (no point) likewise made in French blue wool plus six 3/4" U.S. stamped brass general service eagle buttons down the front. The button holes on this coat are really nice plus there is fine hand stitching around the sleeve linings at the arm holes. There are no shoulder epaulettes or belt loops on this coat and no pockets are present. Maker unknown but nicely done.

Here are some additional measurements. PLEASE check these against your own respective sizes to insure this jacket will fit satisfactorily.

C.S. COMMUTATION JACKET.  #BC5050. This size 50 “Campaigner Grade” light tan jean wool jacket has been worn but remains in excellent physical condition (NO rips, tears, repairs, etc). This coat has been freshly dry cleaned but some dirt stains remain here and there. However, these are not bad at all and do not detract from the coat. This jacket is made from a very unique pattern jean wool (kinda like verigeted but not exactly) and lined in a multi-colored cotton shirting. The sleeves are lined in a natural colored linen. Featured is a standing scalloped cut collar trimmed in 1/4” black twill tape around the edges, plain sleeves without trim or buttons, seven 3/4” wooden buttons down the front, a horizontal cut upper left breast pocket on the outside, plus this jacket is entirely hand stop stitched. Button holes are hand sewn and there is a fair amount of hand stitching on the inside of the jacket as well. There is a slight “roll” along the bottom edge of the coat such as you get when the liner shrinks a little and the body doesn’t. Not sure if that’s the actually reason on this particular jacket but we do need to mention that the “roll” is there. This certainly does not affect the wearability (did I just create a word?) of this jacket though.

Here are some additional measurements. PLEASE check these against your own respective sizes to insure this jacket will fit satisfactorily.

TROUSERS

PLEASE NOTE: The waist measurements on ANY trousers listed on this page are "WAIST AT NAVEL LEVEL" (that high up). This is not necessarily the same waist size found on your blue jean size tags. ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK YOUR WAIST SIZE AT NAVEL LEVEL to insure the trousers you order fit satisfactorily. Three minutes taken to check this measurement may save you all the hassle of reboxing the trousers, the hike to the post office or UPS to ship them back, paying shipping and insurance charges, etc. as well as time lost if you needed the trousers in a hurry.

A lot of guys ask "Why are a lot of your trousers on consignment?" The answer is simple and regrettable - a lot of guys who order new trousers do not follow the simple instructions on this website for taking ACTUAL "off-the-body" measurements; particularly the waist measurement. They guess at it or use the size tag info off jeans. While the size tag info can work for length, when it comes to waist sizing on Victorian era style trousers, 75% of the time (or better) the waist size given on jeans size tags will NOT work. Jeans are cut much differently than Victorian era (CW) trousers. So because instruction were not followed, trousers come back and wind up on consignment. The most regrettable part of this for all parties involved is that the gentleman has to reorder (repurchase) a new pair of trousers plus start the production / waiting process all over again - all the while waiting for his old pair to sell so he can recoup some of his original purchase funds. All of this could have been avoided just for the sake of taking a couple minutes to get an actual off-the-body waist at navel level measurement with a tape measure.

So it is with buying trousers listed on consignment - if anything at least PLEASE take an actual measurement of your waist size AT NAVEL LEVEL using a vinyl tape measure. We want to make sure you're happy with the fit of your purchase but 100% of insuring the size rests in the hands of the buyer. Now if this measurement stuff gets confusing, no sweat e-mail me and we can sort it all out in short order. :-)

All WAIST measurements on the trousers listed below (or found elsewhere on this site) are all with the rear waistband split TIED CLOSED. :-)

is an in-house Stony Brook Company term for our top-of-the-line trousers in terms of historical accuracy (patterning, assembly, hand sewn details, etc).

DARK BLUE FOOT PATTERN TROUSERS   #MC3530. These J.T. Martin contract pattern DARK blue trousers were made by Chris Daley and measure in with a 35” waist x 30” length. They have been to the field and have some light stains and a stray blade of grass here and there so a trip to the dry cleaners would be a help (not mandatory but would help). These trousers have a little wear to them but certainly nothing severe as they do remain in very solid very serviceable condition (no rips, tears, repairs, etc). These trousers have a 1.5” dark shade of sky blue side seam striping for sergeants rank and the right side stripe does have some damage to it near the top (see photos when posted). Of course if you don’t need sergeant’s striping these can be very easily removed.

These trousers feature side seam pockets, a right side watch pocket, split rear waistband without a tie-back cord, white cotton drill pockets & waistband facings, brown polished cotton fly facings, paperbacked tin buttons (5 large on the waistband and 3 smaller in the fly) plus rolled machine hemmed cuffs. The hems on these trousers were done by a modern tailor shop so they currently have a modern serged edge inside the cuff. This can be easily removed and replaced with hand hemming.

Our camera is out for repairs so it’ll be a few days before I can get some photos taken and posted.

SKY BLUE WILLIAM DEERING TROUSERS.   SALE PENDING  #TT3830. These size 38" x 30" William Deering pattern trousers have been worn but remain in very nice condition. They have also been freshly dry cleaned. There has been a little touch-up work done on these tropusers in the form of retacking some facings where the stitching loosened up a little plus some of the button holes have been reworked (by hand of course) again to tighten up some loose stitches. Finally, there were two 3" (+/-) long frayed areas right along the bottom edge of each cuff. These too have been repaired with hand stitching. All work was done in our shop where these trousers were originally made.

These Deering contract pattern trousers were made by Stony Brook Company to their "Museum Grade" specifications (machine sewn main seams but with EXTENSIVE hand finishing and hand sewn details) using Charlie Childs/County Cloth #K2 sky blue kersey. These trousers feature white cotton drill pockets, waistband facings & right side fly facing plus brown polished cotton left side fly facings. Additional features are a right side watch pocket, paperbacked tin buttons (seven on the waistband and five smaller in the fly), split rear waistband w/ tie-back cord, plus rolled hand hemmed cuffs w/ cuff split reinforcements. Stamped on the waistband is the maker stamp "WM. DEERING, PORTLAND, ME", a size "4" stamp (although a little faded) plus a "JOS. JONES, NY INSPECTOR" stamp.

TWO PAIR, SCHUYLKILL ARSENAL MOUNTED PATTERN TROUSERS. #RZ9265. Here we have two pair of partially completed Schuylkill Arsenal MOUNTED pattern trousers made in sky blue 100% wool. Being assembled by Stony Brook Company in their "Standard Grade" finish (principally machine sewn but w/ some hand sewn details). The two sizes available are:

42 & 48.

These trousers are about 50% complete and we will of course finish for the buyer to his respective sizes upon sale and at NO additional charge. Given that these are only partially assembled we can also do some alterations to size. If any of these trousers are of interest E-MAIL ME and let me know the size you need. I can then get back to you to let you know if they can be altered to the requested size. ALSO, given that we're VERY BUSY in the shop we'll need some time to be able to complete the work on any ordered pair.

Upon completion these trousers feature cotton drill side seam pockets & facings, an SA pattern right side watch pocket, split rear waistband w/ tie-back cord, rolled edge/machine felled mounted reinforcement panels, split faced & HAND hemmed cuffs plus paper backed tin buttons in the fly and for suspenders. On a construction note, the majority of the main body seam as well as the inseams are REVERSED as per original mounted pattern trousers. We do not install the undersole strap buttons in the cuffs on "Standard Grade" trousers unless specifically requested by the buyer. If you wish to have the undersole strap buttons there is a $5.00 charge (just to cover the cost of the eight small buttons).

These mounted trousers also feature a full cut (wide) upper leg as per the original pair we drafted our pattern from. Now I know some gentlemen will ask about tapering the legs but no, we cannot taper the leg on these trousers as that will severely distort the fit of the mounted reinforcement panels (been there, tried that, disaster).

PHOTO NOTE: The trousers in the photos below are NOT any of these two trousers on consignment. The trousers in the photos show what these trousers will look like UPON COMPLETION. Swatches of the fabric the trousers (#RZ9265) are made from are available simply upon request and at no cost.

Both the pieced cuffs plus the intentional misalignment of the rear waist were done to show hasty wartime production. Made by Bristol Hollow.
